Wouldn’t it be handy to organise sharing a taxi ride with somebody else travelling to the same area? Not only would it save you some cash, it could also save wasted fuel if you’re an eco hippy.
My initial thought tonight was an iPhone app to log your current location, a destination area (no exact house number or personal details), and a time you want to travel.
Using your details it would then check if anybody else is within a radius and looking for a ride share around the same time. If there’s no matches - your request is logged in case others are looking later on. You could then receive an alert if a match is found. Communication between the matches would need to be thought out a bit more.
I was thinking it would be good to share a taxi home from a night in town possibly with a neighbour you’ve never met! Or a taxi back to the train station from a business centre where other people may have been attending meetings that day.
The service could even be sponsored or run by local taxi firms to promote it. Okay - they might lose out on additional fares, but its saving fuel costs and something they can promote as “being green”.
The idea could also be applied to existing car sharing networks promoted to office workers across the country. Such as my local one www.haltonjourneyshare.com
Obviously this idea would only take off with a really big critical mass adopting it. Hence why I’m writing it here as a record in time.
